Colnago C64 Private Collection

The C64 Private Collection was the flagship of the C-Series — entirely handcrafted in Italy and the ultimate expression of bonded lug-and-tube construction. Compared to its predecessor, the C60, the C64 introduced a wealth of technical innovations, beginning with the carbon rear dropouts (and fork), the aerodynamically shaped seatpost with integrated clamp, the monocoque seat tube, and the then-new direct mount brake system (plus a disc brake option). The design of the head tube and fork provided greater comfort and balance at the front end. The headset cup is made from a special polymer composed of carbon fibres and a specific blend of nylon and elastomers, giving it the additional ability to absorb road vibrations and thereby improving both handling and comfort.

The fork is designed for direct mount brakes, which are stronger and more powerful. Thanks to the new carbon fibre monocoque structure — including the fork tips — it has been made significantly lighter. The disc brake version allows for internal cable routing (via a special "D"-shaped pivot design) in combination with the Colnago Sr9 stem. The bottom bracket is based on the Colnago TF82.5 standard, which combines the reliability and practicality of a threaded bottom bracket (BSA) with the width and high stiffness that characterise the PressFit standard. The then-new monocoque seat tube begins at the bottom bracket shell, is lighter and stiffer, and is therefore able to transfer the rider's full power to the drivetrain.

To maximise integration and aerodynamic cleanliness, the C64 uses the same seatpost as the V1-r and V2-r, featuring an aerodynamic truncated profile cross-section. The clamping mechanism is fully integrated for improved aesthetics and aerodynamic cleanliness, easily accessible with an Allen key at the base of the top tube. A further feature is the monocoque carbon fibre dropouts with replaceable internal derailleur hanger plate, offering advantages in terms of overall structural robustness and weight savings. The left chainstay is noticeably oversized to counteract chain pull.

Experience gained in the wind tunnel with the Concept, V1-r, and V2-r frames contributed to the development of all aerodynamic details, including the recessed surface on the down tube where the bottle cage rests — beneath which sits the frame's serial number, riveted directly into the tube. Note the cable routing plate, derived directly from the mould of the bottom bracket junction. The geometry was also revised, with a shorter head tube and a slightly lowered bottom bracket to improve handling, alongside increased tyre clearance.
